Wu Man & Friends(China)

Cited by the Los Angeles Times as “the artist most responsible for bringing the pipa to the Western World”, Wu Man is a Chinese pipa and ruan player and composer.
Graduating from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing as the first recipient of a master's degree of Pipa playing and the winner of the first prize in the 1989 National Music Performance Competition, Wu went to the United States in 1990 at the age of 25. She performs with Chinese traditional music groups but is also known for her interpretation of contemporary compositions, as well as her work in jazz and cross-cultural music. Many composers including Terry Riley, Philip Glass, Lou Harrison, Tan Dun etc., have composed works specifically for her.
Wu has performed and recorded with the Kronos Quartet, Henry Threadgill, Liu Sola, Martin Simpson, and Yo-Yo Ma's The Silk Road Ensemble. In 1999, Wu Man was invited to play at the White House with Yo-yo Ma. It was also in the same year that Wu was chosen by Ma to receive the City of Toronto Glenn Gould Protégé Prize.
Renowned internationally as a virtuosic Pipa performer, Wu Man has also carved out a career creating and collaborating on projects that give this ancient Chinese instrument a new role in today’s music world, not only introducing the instrument to new audiences, but greatly enhancing and growing the core repertoire.
